A man was killed and woman critically injured when a tire separated and sent their vehicle tumbling on Interstate 75 in Sarasota County Saturday evening.
Three children, all using seatbelts, received minor injuries, the Florida Highway Patrol said.
Robert Meehan, 32, died and Yahaira Castro, 27, received what the FHP called critical injuries in the wreck that occurred about 7:30 p.m. at I-75 and River Road. She was taken To Bayfront Medical Center.
The three children, Crystal Meehan, 6, James Meehan, 4, and Megan St. Jean, 4, were taken to Venice Hospital, the accident report said. All were from Port Charlotte.
Meehan was driving south on the interstate when the left rear tire tread on the 1997 Nissan Pathfinder separated, the FHP said.
He lost control and the vehicle veered onto the shoulder and flipped. Robert Meehan and Castro, who were not wearing seatbelts, were thrown from the vehicle, the highway patrol said.
No charges were filed and alcohol was not a factor in the accident, the FHP said.
