A 34-year-old man's plan to take a bag of money today from a Disabled American Veterans hall in Bradenton was thwarted when the organization's members chased, tackled, then detained the suspect until deputies arrived, the Manatee County Sheriff's Office said.
Frederick McGhee, of 1515 Suponic Ave., Sarasota, has been charged with armed robbery and aggravated assault.
Deputies give this account of what happened about 3:45 p.m. today at the Bradenton DAV hall on 111 63rd Ave. E.:
Frederick walked behind the bar and took a bag containing $1,589 and tried to leave. He was stopped by Auxiliary DAV junior vice commander Darrell Dawson. Frederick swung a large knife at Dawson, 44, then ran from the building. Dawson was not hurt.
Dawson and other DAV members then chased after Frederick and tackled him. The money was recovered.
