PORT-OF-SPAIN, Trinidad - A book by an Uruguayan journalist that Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez gave to President Barack Obama was ranked No. 2 on Amazon.com on Sunday.
It's an astounding jump for "Open Veins of Latin America: Five Centuries of the Pillage of a Continent," by Uruguayan journalist Eduardo Galeano.
The paperback edition was ranked 54,295 before Chavez gave Obama a Spanish-language edition on Saturday.
The 1971 book documents how European and American commercial interests have dominated and afflicted Latin America since the Spanish conquest, and it's a favorite among left-leaning Latin Americans from Argentina to Mexico.
"He believes the book tells the truth, and he wants to give Obama the truth," said Michael Shifter, a Latin America analyst at the Inter-American Dialogue group think tank in Washington.
