Clearwater police officers have arrested a man they say shot another because of an ongoing dispute over a woman.
John Dean, 55, of 2185 Laurence Drive, Clearwater, has been charged with aggravated battery. Police say Dean shot Randy Lovelace, 52, two times this afternoon after the two got in a dispute in a parking lot at 2790 Gulf to Bay Boulevard.
Lovelace was taken to a local hospital with injuries that were not life-threatening, Clearwater police spokeswoman Elizabeth Watts said.
Police give this account of what happened about 4 p.m. today:
After Dean and Lovelace argued in the parking lot, Dean got into his vehicle and drove away. Lovelace followed and pulled in front of Dean's car in the 700 block of Edenville Avenue.
Dean got out of his car and shot Lovelace in the arm and leg. At 4:12 p.m., a Clearwater police sergeant was driving on nearby Druid Road when he saw Lovelace's car stopped in the middle of the road.
The sergeant found the wounded Lovelace inside and called paramedics. Detectives identified Dean as a shooter a few hours later and arrested him at his Largo home.
