SAFETY HARBOR - The 18-year-old man whose leg was severed when he was struck by a car early Monday on Main Street in Safety Harbor remains in critical condition this afternoon.
Andrew Scott Hall was in front of his apartment building on Main Street, just east of McMullen Booth Road, when he was hit at 1 a.m., according to the Pinellas County Sheriff's Office.
A Honda Accord apparently swerved off the road and toward a sidewalk before striking Hall, authorities said.
In addition to a severed leg, Hall suffered a crushed pelvis, authorities said. He was in critical condition at Bayfront Medical Center, a hospital spokeswoman said.
Sheriff's investigators are not sure who was driving the Honda, said Pinellas Sheriff's spokeswoman Marianne Pasha.
Neither Joshua Dean West, 24, of 3536 Marlin Spike Drive, Tampa – who is possibly the driver – nor another man in the car, Douglas Zeigler, 24, of Clearwater, was cooperating with the sheriff's office's investigation, Pasha said.
The Accord was speeding, and sheriff's investigators are trying to determine whether alcohol was involved.
