WESTON - A suburban Broward County resident reported a third bear sighting, prompting state wildlife officials to prepare traps for the animal.
The third sighting of the black bear was on Tuesday. State officers rushed to the neighborhood in western Broward County, but couldn't find the bear. Officers have prepared a trap in case it returns.
It's part of the state's struggle with a soaring number of bear complaints; the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission received 2,969 nuisance bear calls last year, up from 450 in 1998. Yet bears haven't been spotted in that area of Broward since 1978.
Officials say houses have replaced bear habitat.
