The name of Sam Horton, a longtime educator and local civil rights leader who died this month at the age of 79, will adorn the school district's Instructional Services Center on North 40th Street.

The Hillsborough County School Board on Tuesday voted to name the center after Horton to honor the former NAACP leader's efforts in developing curriculum and educational needs.

Horton was a principal and district administrator before retiring in 1991. He also was one of the architects of the district's 1971 desegregation plan and was past president of the local chapter of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People.

The school board also chose to name the Kimbell Full Service School for Delia Sanchez, a longtime community leader who helped bring the Head Start early childhood program to Tampa.

She was known by many as the "Mother Teresa of our community," and school board member Jack Lamb said Sanchez "epitomizes the work the district has done with young children."

The school is at East 26th Avenue in Tampa and serves as a parent resource center, a bridge to social services and community agencies.
