DADE CITY - Yvonne Reins, principal at Sunray Elementary, will be the new principal at Cox Elementary, the Pasco County School District announced this week.
Reins succeeds Leila Mizer, who is transferring to a position in the district office in Land O' Lakes.
Cox Elementary traditionally has experienced more difficulty than most Pasco County schools under the state's accountability system, pulling in D's or C's when school grades came out.
The school also is in one of the district's most economically disadvantaged areas, with nearly all of the 544 students qualifying for the free and reduced-price meal program.
Cox also is under its first year of restructuring under the No Child Left Behind Act because it consistently has come up short in meeting the federal government's requirements for showing adequate yearly progress. The district took several steps this year to try to make improvements.
Mizer has been Cox's principal for 13 years. The decision on her transfer came in March during a conversation with Superintendent Heather Fiorentino when Mizer told the superintendent that "13 years is long enough."
The district will be advertising for a principal at Sunray Elementary.
