NEW PORT RICHEY - A 15-year-old boy has been charged with culpable negligence in connection with an apartment complex fire that caused $100,000 in damage.
The teenager, who is not being identified because of his age, was in an apartment at the High Points Apartment complex about 3:30 p.m. Monday when he created a homemade flame thrower by setting fire to the spray released from an aerosol can, said Capt. Jeffrey Harrington with the New Port Richey Police Department.
The teenager couldn't control the flame, and the fire spread through the complex on Trichel Lane, Harrington said.
Two units in the apartment were severely burned and four more units sustained minor damaged, Harrington said. All 10 people in the apartment complex managed to escape unharmed.
The American Red Cross is helping the victims.
