Two people in a small plane escaped serious injury when the aircraft crashed in Polk County today.
The 2006 Technam Seirra Light Sport plane crashed about 1:30 p.m. near Hickory Hammock and Shell roads, just west of U.S. 27, Polk County Fire Rescue said.
The pilot was identified as Kenn Brennen and his passenger was Kenneth Brennen.
Investigators with the Federal Aviation Administration have been to the scene, authorities said, and the National Transportation Safety Board has been notified. The airplane was not associated with the Sun 'N Fun Fly In occurring in Lakeland this week.
Authorities did not say from where the airplane took off or where it was headed.
The crash caused some brush to catch fire. Authorities are arriving on scene and had no other details on the fire, which apparently was put out by a hand-held fire extinguisher.
Nearby, a Polk County sheriff's patrol car was damaged by fire, but authorities said they weren't sure whether it was fire caused by the plane crash. That fire scorched about 7 acres and was contained by mid-afternoon.
