NAPLES - Florida Highway Patrol officials announced that a 78-mile stretch of Allligator Alley previously closed because of a brush fire is now open.
Officials said the smoke has cleared enough to allow daytime traffic flow along the highway until 7 p.m. The road will close again for the overnight hours, officials said.
State Road 29, also affected by the smoke, will remain closed however.
For the past two days, the 78-mile, cross-state stretch of roadway was closed due to zero visibility from smoke caused by a 12,000-acre, lightning-sparked brush fire. That fire continues to burn.
Statewide, officials say 1,538 fires have consumed 42,850 acres this year. The South Florida Water Management District has put a burn ban into effect across South Florida.
