Census mapping a waste

Your tax dollars at work! Today a woman came down my street and told me she was with the U.S. Census. She was "mapping out" all the houses on our street.
She carried a 3G-type device she said was outfitted with GPS. I asked her why they were wasting money doing this mapping when surely the government already has information and location on every taxpayer household in the country.
Ever heard of Google Earth? These guys have already done this.
It would be interesting to see how much budget went to mapping for the census. This information is readily available free on the Internet. Unbelievable.
