School voucher forms now available

Step Up For Students is making available applications for private school vouchers for the 2009-10 school year.

The annual scholarships are worth up to $3,950 and can be used at more than 1,000 private schools statewide. They're available on a first-approved, first-awarded basis.

Families can qualify if they meet the household income guidelines for the federal school lunch program. The income limit for a family of four is $40,793.

Students also must be entering either kindergarten or the first grade, or have attended a public school this year.

The vouchers are backed by a program that diverts corporate income taxes to private school vouchers. The program served about 23,400 students this year.
