NAPLES - Riding strong performances by senior distance stars Connor Revord and Jordan Schilit, the Jesuit boys track and field team outlasted host Naples Golden Gate on Friday to win the Class 2A-Region 3 meet.

Revord won the 1,600 and finished second in the 800, while Schilit qualified for next week's state meet in three events - winning the 3,200 and placing second in the 1,600 and as a member of the Tigers' 4x800 relay team.

"The guys did well," said Jesuit coach Ray Rodriguez. "I think we've got a shot to finish in the top four at states. We've got a great bunch of kids. They always seem to put it out there in situations when we need them."

Robinson's Darrin Gibson easily won his showdown with Revord in the 800, cruising to victory by more than three seconds.

Wiregrass Ranch was the best local finisher for the girls, placing sixth. Sophomore Ariel Grey finished third in the 1,600, more than 15 seconds behind defending 2A state champion Joane Pierre of Immokalee. She also placed third as a member of the Bulls' 4x800 relay team.

Tampa Catholic finished 12th, led by Maddi Schmidt, who won the triple jump.

Stewart, Joyer second at state weightlifting meet

NEW PORT RICHEY - River Ridge's Mario Stewart and Wesley Chapel's Kamran Joyer took second place in their weight classes at the Class 2A state boys weightlifting meet Friday at River Ridge High.

Stewart tied for first place but lost the state title by seven-tenths of a pound. He had a bench press of 275 pounds and a school-record 240 pounds in the clean and jerk for a 515-pound total in the 139-pound class.

"I feel good about second place, but I wish I could have gotten first," Stewart said. "I didn't get my last lift 255 pounds), so I really didn't deserve it."

Joyer had a 440-pound bench press and a 325-pound clean and jerk for a 765-pound total in the heavyweight class.

Akeem Spence of Fort Walton Beach won with a 770-pound total.

Joyer, a senior, is headed for the University of South Florida on a football scholarship.

"Spence did a good job," Joyer said. "I thought I should have been able to get at least a 330 on the clean and jerk. I'm real disappointed. He's a friend of mine."
