When a man and woman enter into marriage, it is a legal contract that is supposed to last until "death do us part." However, if the man becomes abusive, then people are all for divorce (breaking the contract), and rightly so.
But when a state is being abused by the federal government, some people mock the idea of states' rights and consider divorce (secession) to be treason. Where is the consistency?
Either human beings have a right to get out of an abusive relationship, or they don't. You can't have it both ways.
If you want to debate whether states are being abused, that is fine. But labeling people trying to escape abuse as "traitors" is hypocritical, divisive and leads to further resentment. Secession may not be the answer, but it is the right of every human to get out of an abusive relationship, and we have the right to discuss it without being labeled as traitors.
