TALLAHASSEE - The Florida House has passed two 2010 ballot proposals offering property tax relief, but both face long odds in the Senate.
One (HJR 738) would limit annual taxes to 1.35 percent of the highest taxable value of a home, business or other real estate.
The other (HJR 7057) would provide a tax break for non-homestead properties.
The existing Save Our Homes Amendment limits annual assessment increases on primary homes, or homesteads, to 3 percent. Non-homestead properties now have a 10 percent cap. The House proposal would reduce that limit to 5 percent.
That measure passed unanimously, but the House split 79-37 on the 1.35 percent proposal. Similar measures (SJR 532 and SJR 738) are stalled in Senate committees.
