NEWS & NOTES

Crumbley takes Steinbrenner job

Hillsborough County's all-time leader in baseball coaching victories is returning to the diamond.

John Crumbley, who built Jesuit into a state power during 22 seasons as the program's head coach, has accepted the head coaching job at Steinbrenner High, which opens in August.

"It's exciting and a good feeling to get back into the game," Crumbley said.

It will be Crumbley's first head coaching position since stepping down at Jesuit following the 2006 season. Crumbley owns a career record of 575-124. During his time at Jesuit, he led the Tigers to 17 playoff appearances, 11 trips to the state final four and won three state titles (1994, 1997, 2000).

Since stepping down as baseball coach, Crumbley has served as Jesuit's athletic director and golf coach. Crumbley said he will step down from his position at Jesuit at the end of the year and join the faculty at Steinbrenner, where he will teach mathematics.

Schuster goes for 5th no-hitter

Mitchell pitcher Patrick Schuster takes the mound this afternoon in search of his fifth consecutive no-hitter. The Class 6A-District 7 semifinal game at Countryside will be broadcast live by Bright House Sports Network, Ch. 47, at 4 p.m. The network will replay the telecast at 8.

Cate earns 5A soccer honor

Newsome senior midfielder Ana Cate was named the 5A Player of the Year by FloridaGirlsSoccer.com. Cate, who will play at Auburn, had 15 goals and 15 assists last season as the Wolves went 23-4-1 and advanced to the 5A region final.

Also, East Bay promoted assistant coach Rebecca Wickham to fill its vacancy as girls coach. Wickham had been an assistant for two seasons to predecessor Claudine Sosa, who was named as Strawberry Ridge's coach last week.

First to go

The first flock of Sunlake football players will sign their letters-of-intent Thursday to play college football. Darren Kanhai, Chris Harrington and Mike Shaver are the first players in the school's two-year history to sign letters-of-intent to play football.

Kanhai will attend Division III Maritime College in Throggs Neck, N.Y., and is slotted as a defensive back; Harrington will play receiver at NAIA Faulkner University in Montgomery, Ala. Shaver, a running back, will play at Division II North Greenville in Tigerville, S.C.

Meet the coach

New Anclote High football coach Matt Wicks will host a meet and greet at 7 p.m. Wednesday at the Paul R. Smith Middle School cafeteria in Holiday. Wicks, a former Georgia Southern and Iowa Wesleyan College player, was the offensive coordinator at Pennsylvania's Radnor High the past three seasons. Anclote opens its doors in August.

Morrison to FSU

Sunlake state champion swimmer Brad Morrison will compete for Florida State and is signing a letter-of-intent Thursday. Last season, Morrison, who participates in the dual enrollment program at Pasco-Hernando Community College and scored 1,140 on the SAT, won the state title in the 100 backstroke with a personal best of 51.87.
