TAMPA - Tampa Electric has completed the construction of two natural gas-fired peaking units — each capable of generating 60 megawatts of power — at the utility's Bayside Power Station.

The units are designed to provide power during periods of peak demand. The utility plans to build three more peaking units by September.

Together, the five units will generate enough power to serve about 65,000 homes, Tampa Electric said.

"These two new peaking units are consistent with our commitment to provide reliable energy in an environmentally responsible and cost-effective manner," Tampa Electric President Chuck Black said.

The project is part of a $1.2 billion, 10-year program to reduce emissions.
