A Hillsborough County sheriff's deputy knew something was amiss about a backhoe chugging along in Gibsonton about 3 this morning, an affidavit states.
The deputy pulled over the backhoe on Nundy Avenue just west of U.S. 41 South after noting the driver wasn't using slow-moving-vehicle indicators.
Further investigation and a chat with the driver, Charles James Smith, 24, revealed the backhoe was stolen, an affidavit states.
Smith told the deputy he had taken the backhoe, valued at about $19,000, from a site at 5555 S. 78th St. in Tampa, roughly six miles north of the traffic stop, the sheriff's office said.
Smith, of Ruskin, was charged with felony grand theft. He was held on $2,000 at the Orient Road Jail today.
