TALLAHASSEE - The Florida House has passed a measure that toughens the state's seat belt law.

The bill (SB 344) that passed the House 95-20 Wednesday gives police officers the right to ticket drivers who fail to buckle up. It passed the Senate on Tuesday and now goes to Gov. Charlie Crist, who indicated he'd sign it.

State lawmakers had defeated measures to make seat belt violations a primary offense for two decades.

The bill was named the Dori Slosberg and Katie Marchetti Safety Belt Law in memory of two young Florida women killed in separate accidents while not wearing safety belts.

Slosberg's father, former state Rep. Irv Slosberg of Boca Raton, had sponsored the legislation during his years in the House.
