ALTAMONTE SPRINGS - Andy Hersh's bid to win a state singles title ended Tuesday when he lost in straight sets to Fort Myers High's Michael Waddell in the Class 3A competition.

The Newsome senior still has a shot at a doubles title after he and partner Colin Edwards advanced to today's No. 1 individual doubles final with a three-set victory against Bradenton Bayshore. Hersh and Edwards rallied for a 3-6, 6-4, 6-4 victory.

On the girls side, River Ridge's No. 1 doubles team of Nicola Wellman and Tijana Subotic lost in the finals to Gulf Coast, 6-2, 6-0.

The Class 3A and 1A overall championships conclude today, while the 4A and 2A tournaments get started.

Alonso's Tyler Snook (4A), Jesuit's Chase Merlin (2A) and Wiregrass Ranch's Sydney Simpson (2A) will be competing in the singles competition. Snook and Michael Broderick will compete in the doubles competition.
