St. Petersburg Fire & Rescue is asking drivers to avoid 28th Street between Eighth Avenue South and 16th Avenue South because of an overturned tanker.
The wreck has also closed the 28th Street exit from Interstate 275 south since about 10 a.m. today. Assistant Fire Chief Bill Jolley said a hazardous-materials team is still cleaning up the scene as of 2:15 p.m.
The tanker, carrying 4,800 gallons of recycled oil, overturned on 28th Street beneath the interstate overpass. The tanker's driver had to be extricated but did not suffer serious injuries, officials said.
Jolley said the hazardous-materials team is still offloading the oil. The team also must send a camera into a storm-water drain to check for any oil runoff.
