BRADENTON - A 1-year-old boy was hit and killed by a car as he emerged from an apartment in Manatee County Saturday night.
The Florida Highway Patrol said Miguel Aragon-Castro, 32, was starting a 2000 Hyundai in the parking lot of an apartment building at 430 34th Ave. Drive E., Bradenton, when the vehicle lurched forward and jumped a concrete curb.
Miguel Aragon Figueroa of Bradenton was just coming out of an apartment with his brother and was hit by the car about 11:20 p.m., the highway patrol said.
Alcohol was not a factor in the accident at Manatee Woods Apartments and the case is under investigation, the FHP said.
The accident report did not specify the relationship between the driver and the child.
However, a neighbor said the driver was the boy's father.
Neighbor Priscillia Mondragon said she witnessed the accident.
"You could tell he hit the bump and then he went straight in," Mondragon said. "You just heard the crash and everything."
Mondragon said that the man started yelling, "Help me, God! Help me, God!"
She said her husband went to the scene to help the child.
"He touched his back," Mondragon said. "He tried moving him, but he wouldn't move."
