Former Armwood High football standout Justin Cabbagestalk, who was arrested earlier this summer on burglary charges, has been suspended indefinitely from the Vanderbilt football team, Commodores director of media relations Larry Leathers said Monday.
For now, Leathers said, Cabbagestalk remains on scholarship with Vandy and will be allowed to participate in the Commodores' preseason training camp, which starts Friday. But Cabbagestalk, a 6-foot-4, 275-pound offensive lineman, will not be allowed to dress out or travel with the team for any games.
Cabbagestalk's status with the school and team could change, Leathers said, depending on the final adjudication of his case. Cabbagestalk's preliminary arraignment is set for Aug. 12.
According to a Hillsborough County Sheriff's arrest report, Cabbagestalk was arrested in June on charges of burglary of an unoccupied dwelling and criminal mischief between $200 and $1,000. He was booked and released after posting $8,000 bail.
A sheriff's spokesperson said Cabbagestalk, 18, was one of four teens who broke into the house. He said the other three teens were juveniles. The group allegedly entered through a kitchen window and when an alarm sounded, they ran through the front door, where they were seen by a witness. The teens were found fleeing through the neighborhood and eventually arrested, the spokesperson said.
The sheriff's spokesperson said Cabbagestalk told officers he heard an alarm go off but had not been anywhere in the house or around it and added he "was just in the neighborhood hanging with friends."
Cabbagestalk is the second of nine Armwood football scholarship signees to face burglary charges, and the third player from the Hawks to be arrested in the past year. On April 29, Hawks defensive back Angelo Hadley was arrested on felony charges of grand theft of a firearm, armed burglary of a dwelling and third degree grand theft. Hadley had also been arrested April 5 on charges of lewd and lascivious behavior stemming from the same incident.
As a result of his arrests, Hadley, a three-year starter for the Hawks and a Tribune All-Hillsborough County first-team selection the past two seasons, was dropped from his National Letter of Intent by North Carolina.
Last summer, another Tampa product and Vanderbilt signee, former Robinson star running back Jermaine Doster, was arrested following an incident at an Ybor City night club. Doster was charged with disorderly conduct, criminal mischief and obstructing an officer without violence, all misdemeanors.
For violating team rules, Doster was suspended from game action and did not dress for the 2008 season. He did, however, continue to practice with the team. Doster has returned to game eligibility and is preparing for his sophomore season.
