I want to bring to the attention of Hillsborough County a source of waste. The sheriff's office opened a child-care center on the Falkenburg jail site. This project was nine years coming to fruition. They did a great job. It was, and is, a beautiful center. They filled it with top-of-the-line furniture, toys and supplies. They hired a company to run the center, which was to benefit sheriff's employees.
The waste occurred when, after one year, they closed the center. I have no idea why so much time, money and effort went into a project and then it was closed so quickly. It has been closed for over a year, and everything in it is as if the employees had just walked out the door. I worked at the center as the assistant director, so I helped unpack every box and set up the school.
There are things in the cabinets that have not even been opened. Headstart programs and preschools all over the county could benefit from these supplies. Shouldn't an attempt be made to recoup some of the money that was spent on this project?
