Regarding "Bedlam plagues clunker program" (Aug. 2): In America, it seems, we have a tendency to buy new and dispose of old items even if they are still usable. An idea: Do not destroy the vehicles. I am sure that at least 25 percent to 50 percent are drivable. Maybe the miles per gallon might not be the best, but donate them to the Salvation Army, Goodwill, VFW or the Kidney Foundation. Maybe even our military and their families could use a vehicle.
Ten years ago my daughter was in the Army. I was curious why she never had paper towels or paper napkins when I visited her and my grandson. Come to find out she did not have enough money for those items. She had to apply for food stamps and WIC for her son while serving our country.
Let's stop throwing away perfectly usable items. I know I could find homes for almost every car that has to be destroyed needlessly. Maybe we could give them a tax write-off for the donation.
