FORT MYERS - Authorities say a man was not injured after his semi truck hit a Florida panther, killing the animal.
The Florida Highway Patrol says 49-year-old James Bettis was driving along Interstate 75 in Fort Myers early Wednesday morning when he ran over the panther. Bettis told officials he tried to swerve out of the way as the panther ran across the highway.
Authorities say the trailer's rear tires ran over the endangered animal and it died on the scene.
Since the 1980s, officials have collared panthers to track their population. Panthers were placed on the endangered species list in 1967.
