Bed tax revenue continues to decline

TAMPA - Hotel and motel tax collections in Hillsborough County continued to decline in June, falling 21.4 percent compared with year-ago figures to about $1.2 million.
Bed tax collections declined 19.1 percent in May and 32.5 percent in April compared with 2008 as the national economy continued to take its toll on the travel industry.
Proceeds from the county's 5 percent bed tax are used for marketing the local visitors industry and paying debt services on local sports venues.
By comparison, Orange County recently reported a 15.9 percent decline in June collections compared with a year ago.
