The number of newly laid-off workers seeking unemployment benefits fell last week, the government said Thursday, a sign that the job market is making gradual improvement.

Here's a look at the numbers.

6.3 million

The number of people continuing to claim benefits. That's up by 69,000 after dropping for three straight weeks
550,000

The number of first time claims for jobless benefits for week ending Aug. 1, seasonally adjusted.

580,000

The number of those claims analysts predicted.

555,250

The four-week average of claims, its lowest point since late Janary

150,000

The number of payroll cuts estimated for July, down from an original estimate of 325,000.
