Published: August 8, 2009

Bored by the same meals? Try adding a splash of color to boost your mood and your nutrition.

The American Dietetic Association offers a culinary rainbow of options that can add flavor and helpful phytochemicals.

Here's the spectrum:

Red: Tomatoes, watermelon and pink grapefruit are sources of lycopene. Research shows that may help fight cancer.

Orange: Pumpkins, carrots and oranges include cancer-fighting beta-carotene.

Yellow and green: Squash and broccoli are known to be helpful in preventing vision loss and cancer.

Blue and white: Onions, garlic and leeks are good for those wanting to prevent heart disease and cancer.
