TAMPA - The price of gasoline in Florida rose by nearly a dime a gallon this past week, possibly propelled by a rise in wholesale prices since late July.
The 9-cent increase for regular unleaded gas in Florida was slightly less than the 11-cent increase nationwide, AAA Auto Club South said in its weekly report.
The increase does not appear to be linked to the modest rise in the price of oil, which, pushed by a boost in the stock market and the first drop in unemployment in 15 months, went up $1.48 a barrel last week to $70.93, the report said.
The more likely culprit for the average price of a gallon rising to a penny more than a month ago could be the 19-cent rise in wholesale prices since July 20, the report said.
The average price for a gallon of gas in Florida rose to $2.61, with the national average reaching $2.64.
Gas in Georgia and Tennessee remain a bargain compared with Florida: $2.48 in Georgia and $2.47 in Tennessee. Local gas taxes in Florida account for much of the difference.
