All those commercials featuring top celebrities looking flawless in foundations available at the nearest drugstore always make me wonder: Is that really possible for the rest of us?
Bay area makeup artist Melissa Duchaine, who works on some of the faces in those commercials, says yes, it is. Sort of.
The biggest problem women have when they buy makeup is choosing the wrong shade, she says.
"Most of us think we know what's best for our skin tone, but oftentimes we pick the wrong colors and that product just ends up in a drawer. That's money wasted, not saved."
The trained specialists you see in many department stores can help. And for a lot of women, finding just the right natural-looking foundation may be worth the extra it might cost to get that kind of assistance, she says.
Still, there are some good less-expensive alternatives at the discount counter, Duchaine says. Her favorite?
"L'Oreal True Match is a good pick because it's more forgiving if you pick the wrong color for your skin tone," she says.
It also contains no added oils, fragrances or pore-clogging ingredients that can cause breakouts.
A 1-ounce bottle of True Match Super-Blendable Makeup costs $10.95.
