Case delays for 'Poppa Love,' accused of fathering teen relative's baby

TAMPA - A man accused of fathering a son with a 13-year-old relative appeared in court this morning, and a judge heard that a delay in processing DNA and an uncooperative witness was holding up progress in the matter.
John "Poppa Love" Speights, 43, began a relationship with the teen relative in 2007, according to Tampa police. He was arrested in July 2008, eight months after the child was born. Jail records show he was released two weeks later after posting $60,000 bail.
Speights, of 1906 E. Hanna Ave., is charged with 10 counts of sexual battery of a child, 10 counts of lewd or lascivious battery, incest and impregnation of a child.
Circuit Judge Wayne Timmerman set a new court date of Sept. 14.
