TAMPA - With Hillsborough and Pinellas counties reporting pedestrian fatality rates higher than the national average, the Florida Department of Transportation today is launching a "Stop and Look" campaign for drivers and pedestrians.

"The Stop and Look safety campaign will encourage pedestrians to be predictable to motorists and for motorists to drive alert and share the road," department District 7 Secretary of Transportation Don Skelton said in a news release.

The national average for pedestrian fatalities is 1.59 annual deaths per 100,000 people. Pinellas' average is 3.24 and Hillsborough's is 2.68 deaths per 100,000 people.
