TAMPA - Florida students taking the ACT college entrance exam performed slightly worse than they did last year, and the state continues to rank among the lowest nationwide.
The graduating high school class of 2009 posted a composite score of 19.5 on the exam, 0.3 percentage points lower than the previous year. The average national composite score on the test was 21.2. Only Kentucky (19.4), Mississippi (18.9) and the District of Columbia (19.4) performed worse than Florida.
Overall, 105,297 Florida students (62 percent of graduates) took the test, an increase of more than 10,000 students in the previous year and almost double the number taking the exam in 2005. That trend echoes what is being seen nationwide, with a record 1.48 million graduating students taking the test this year. Five states now require students to take the test.
