The Tampa Tribune is counting down the top 10 football teams in Hillsborough County. The rankings were compiled by the Tribune's four staffers who cover high school football.
Eyebrows were raised when Jefferson lost their spring jamboree game to Robinson, 34-14. The offense looked lost and the defense wasn't able to stop or contain the Knights.
Jefferson, ranked tied for No. 7 in The Tribune's preseason Hillsborough County rankings, looked anything like the program that has made it to the postseason 10-consecutive seasons.
Given the fact several Jefferson starters, including wide receiver Andre Davis, didn't play, Dragons head coach Mike Fenton wasn't worried. That loss, however, has motivated the team in the offseason with a goal of proving their doubters wrong.
The combination of Davis, known as the Freak Show, and junior quarterback Quentin Williams should keep the Dragons in any game in their new Class 3A-District 8. Entering his second season as a starter, Williams, who was one of the passing leaders in Hillsborough County last year, will command a slightly more complex offensive scheme featuring more passing routes.
Defensively, the Dragons are led by defensive back Rodney Mills, linebacker Fred Overstreet and lineman Garrett Wolfe playing in a scheme that's suited to their skills.
"We're going to turn some heads," Davis said. "We've been working real hard.
"Knowing that people don't think we'll be good makes us work harder.
Kickoff Classic: Aug. 28 vs. Chamberlain
Season Opener: Sept. 4 at Hillsborough
