TAMPA - Two Bay area public thrones came up losers, failing to be crowned "America's Best Restroom."
The lavatories at historical the Tampa Theatre and Nova 535, an art gallery-lounge in St. Petersburg, were among the finalists in the annual contest sponsored by the Cintas Corp., which makes restroom supplies and work uniforms.
America voted flamboyant restrooms in the Shoji Tabuchi Theatre in Branson, Mo., the finest in the nation. The theater's restrooms include onyx pedestal sinks, stained glass and chandeliers.
Cintas created the Best Restroom award in 2001.
Tampa Theatre's restrooms feature Vitrolite glass and intricate tile designs.
"Radio City Music Hall. What do they have! Oh, yeah, they're the Radio City Music Hall," said Tara Schroeder, head of Tampa Theatre programming.
Nova 535 has 10 restroom suites with "full-length solid birch stall doors and Italian mocha travertine with black granite diamond inserts in a completely touch-less environment."
Michael S. Novilla, owner of Nova 535, said of the loss, "Certainly we're disappointed that we didn't win, but it will motivate us to try better next time."
