TAMPA - Gen. David Petraeus, commander of Tampa-based U.S. Central Command, will speak at the city's Sept. 11 commemoration and grand opening of Heroes Plaza in Cotanchobee/Fort Brooke Park.
Petraeus, who oversees the military operations in Afghanistan and Iraq, will deliver a brief statement at the dedication ceremony, according to his senior staff members.
Mayor Pam Iorio and a host of other local dignitaries are expected to participate in the memorial service marking the ighth anniversary of the Sept. 11 attacks.
The memorial service was previously held at Tampa Fire Rescue's Firehouse 1, but city officials decided to move the event to the new plaza beginning this year.
The plaza was finished earlier this year, but the memorial will be its official opening.
Heroes Plaza features three 6-foot glass panels, one honoring police and sheriff's deputies; one honoring fire rescue personnel, and one honoring war veterans.
Smaller glass panels will focus on the humanitarian efforts of heroes and the diversity of heroes, including displays on women during World War II and the Buffalo Soldiers.
All of the panels honor those killed in the line of duty.
