TAMPA - Law enforcement officers and people from across the area this week will remember Tampa police Cpl. Mike Roberts, who was fatally shot Wednesday night in the line of duty.

Roberts, 38, will have his name etched into the Tampa Police Memorial monument in front of the department's headquarters, 411 N. Franklin St., at 9 a.m. today.

His wake will be from 6 to 9 p.m. at Blount and Curry Funeral Home, 3207 W. Bearss Ave., and his memorial service will be at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at St. Timothy Catholic Church, 17512 Lakeshore Drive, Lutz.

Roberts was on a routine patrol about 10 p.m. Wednesday in Sulphur Springs when he saw a man pushing a full shopping cart at Nebraska Avenue and Arctic Street. The area had seen a rash of burglaries, so Roberts stopped to investigate.

Roberts confronted Humberto Delgado Jr., and soon the two were struggling, police say. The officer was shot once in the chest.

Along with this week's services, a fund has been established for Roberts' family.

Donations can be made to the Tampa Police Memorial Fundy by sending checks to 411 N. Franklin St., Tampa, FL 33602. In the check's memo section, write: Cpl. Mike Roberts Memorial Fund.

Reporter Ray Reyes can be reached at (813) 259-7920.
