The St. Petersburg Fire Department is working a gas leak at 8th Street and 22nd Avenue South.
The fire department has closed one block area at the location and is evacuating residents, said Lt. Joel Granata, fire department spokesman.
The fire department was called to the scene just after 8 p.m. The leak is coming from a broken pipe; a gas company was headed to the scene to work on the gas leak, he said.
Safety remains a concern.
"Any ignition source can light this gas on fire," Granata said.
