Just days before his team's Kickoff Classic against Newsome, Spoto coach Dale Caparaso said senior running back Jamar Burns has won the starting quarterback position, which came open when returning starter JB Burgess was charged with armed robbery Aug. 15.
As a junior, Burns was the second-leading rusher for the Spartans with 395 yards and four touchdowns.
Caparaso said Burns also will play sparingly at outside linebacker.
Spoto principal Clyde Trathowen said Burgess will not be allowed to attend school until a school hearing is scheduled.

Former Newsome forward Dylan Fugate, the school's all-time leading scorer with 1,070 points, signed to play for NAIA Ave Maria College in Naples, Newsome basketball coach Jon Mackey said.
A 6-foot-5 forward and 2008 graduate, Fugate averaged 13.0 points and 5.1 rebounds per game his senior season.
Fugate left Newsome as a Tampa Tribune All-Hillsborough County, All-Western Conference and Tampa Bay Basketball Coaches Association All-Star selection.
