ST. LEO - Classes for the new academic year got off to a smooth start Tuesday for Saint Leo University's full-time undergraduate students at the main campus in Pasco County.
A record number of students new to Saint Leo, 504 freshmen and 168 transfer students, were expected, based on deposits paid through last week.
Those students and their families were welcomed with a matriculation ceremony held Saturday afternoon, a news release states.
The scheduling gave families time to help move students into residence halls Saturday morning.
The matriculation ceremony introduces families and students to the faculty, customs and core values of the university.
Excellence, community, respect, personal development, responsible stewardship and integrity are ingrained in daily life at Saint Leo and are reliable guideposts for life, President Arthur F. Kirk Jr. told students in his welcome address.
Other highlights during the ceremony included the traditional display of national flags from all the countries represented in the new student population, 27 this year, and performances by the Voices of Christ student choir.
Monday was a day for students to get some academic counseling.
