TAMPA - More than 100 years ago St. Peter Claver Catholic School became the first private school in Florida with a mission to teach black students. But school officials say the landmark school faces a $250,000 budget shortfall for 2009-10.
From 4:30 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. today, St. Peter Claver, 1401 N. Governor St., will hold an open house to enroll more students. School officials also are launching a fund-raising campaign, seeking grants and hoping to establish an endowment program.
The budget shortfall partly is the result of low enrollment and the loss of grants, school officials said in a news release Wednesday.
The school was founded in 1894. The original school building burned and the existing structure opened in 1929. It was in the heart of the former Central Park Village public apartment complex. Central Park Village was torn down in 2007 to make way for a mixed-income housing project, the construction of which has stalled due to financing issues.
For information about the open house and enrollment, call the school at (813) 224-0865.
