TAMPA - Poorly flushed canal systems are the root cause of several fish kills on Davis Islands this month, the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission said Thursday.
The fish died because stagnant water in the canals had too little dissolved oxygen, the agency reported. Commission officials say they didn't find any chemical contamination in the water.
The agency received 10 reports Saturday about a fish kill in the Davis Islands area.
The dead fish included sheepshead, spotted sea trout, catfish and lizard fish.
Water analyses showed low dissolved oxygen readings and high levels of bacteria but no indication of red tide.
On Wednesday, the agency received calls about "a milky discoloration" near Marmora Avenue. The Department of Environmental Protection investigated and found no chemical contamination.
