Which football team has been the most surprising this year?

Wharton senior baseball player Zach Gawrych verbally committed to the University of Tampa, Wildcats coach Scott Hoffman said Thursday.

Gawrych, an outfielder, will be a four-year starter for Wharton. As a junior, he hit .312 with five doubles, one home run, 11 RBIs and 15 runs.

"He's a great kid, a great student and a heck of an athlete," Hoffman said. "He's a wonderful kid. I can't say enough good things about him. He works extremely hard and we're expecting big things from him this year."

•Gaither senior OF Drew Doty recently was named to the 2009 All-Area Code Games team.

Playing for the Oakland Athletics' team, Doty hit .800 (4-for-5) with five walks, four runs, three RBIs and a stolen base at the showcase, held Aug. 5-10 in Long Beach, Calif.

Cross country

The University of South Florida will stage a national youth cross country championship event, which will include boys and girls high school divisions, on Nov. 28 on the Bulls' campus, former King track coach Pete Mirones announced.

Mirones said he hopes the meet eventually rivals two other prominent national cross country championships sponsored by Foot Locker and Nike. The advantage of the USF meet, Mirones said, is Florida's mild weather at that time of year. The two other national meets have recently been held in cold-weather states.

The meet is still in the early stages of development but has commitments from several out-of-state teams and clubs. Mirones hopes to land a title sponsor and award a college scholarship to the overall male and female winners of the highest prep division.

Volleyball

Chelsey Pachoud, a 2009 Riverview graduate, has signed with Quinnipiac University, a Division I program. As a senior, Pachoud led the Sharks with 192 kills, 46 aces, 26 blocks, and 240 digs.
