CLEARWATER - Jesuit senior quarterback Bobby Eveld completed 14 of 23 passes for 223 yards and a pair of first-half touchdowns, but William Griswold's 44-yard field goal was the difference in a one-point loss at Countryside on Friday night in a Kickoff Classic.
Eveld answered Countryside's 80-yard opening drive by taking the Tigers 79 yards the first time they had the ball. His 48-yard scoring pass on which Will Schaefer outleaped a trio of defenders gave Jesuit a 7-6 lead. Eveld also hit Ben Gutowski for a 41-yard strike with just 23 seconds left in the half for a 14-13 advantage.
Backup quarterback Patton Chillura, who finished 4-for-7 for 108 yards, tossed an 8-yard scoring strike, but a porous run defense couldn't make it last.
Andrew Davis scored on a 25-yard burst off left tackle on Countryside's second play of the third quarter before Griswold's kick late in the quarter ended the scoring. Davis finished with 28 yards, but it was Alton Taylor who was most impressive. The senior tailback gashed Jesuit for 153 yards on 17 carries including a 4-yard scoring burst midway through the second quarter.
Schaefer finished with three catches for 71 yards, while Gutowski had two for 56 yards.
Bryce Walker five receptions for 48. Travis Johnson added 88 yards on two catches, including a 66-yarder that set up Jesuit's final score.
