TAMPA - Lakewood ran onto King's field as if it had something to prove, namely that Pinellas schools could not only play with Hillsborough teams, but could beat them — soundly.
"We were really, really pumped up for this," Lakewood coach Cory Moore said. "Hillsborough County schools usually smash Pinellas County teams, and we knew that. We were ready."
King actually jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the early minutes after the Lions blocked a punt and recovered on Lakewood's 3-yard line. After that, however, it was all Lakewood, which ran away with a 53-15 victory. And the Spartans did it despite 18 penalties for almost 200 yards.
"We have to work on some things, that's for sure," Moore said. "But overall I'm happy with our intensity. We came out and kept firing."
Bernard Reedy led the way, rushing for 115 yards in the first half before giving the spotlight to a host of teammates, seven of whom scored in one way or another.
