TAMPA - With a theme park ride as their training ground, about 40 firefighters and instructors practiced rescue operations in swift waters on Thursday.
The firefighters were given access to the Congo River Rapids water ride at Busch Gardens before the park opened in a drill to improve their rescue skills in urban flooding and fast-moving water conditions.
The practice is part of a 40-hour urban flood rescue class offered by Florida Fire College through a Department of Homeland Security grant.
The firefighters are members of two of the state's nine rescue task forces. They are trained to make rescues in structures and in other urban conditions.
Participating in the training session were firefighters from Tampa, St. Petersburg and Orlando and the counties of Hillsborough, Orange and Seminole.
