BRADENTON - It certainly wasn't the best performance possible, but Hillsborough did enough good things Friday night to have Coach Earl Garcia smiling at the conclusion of a Kickoff Classic win against the Seminoles.
The Terriers defense shined the brightest, essentially shutting down Southeast after allowing a touchdown on the Seminoles' first drive. Southeast marched 56 yards in 11 plays to take a 6-0 lead, but Hillsborough yielded only 103 yards the rest of the way while forcing two turnovers and collecting five sacks.
"I thought they played great after the first drive," Garcia said of the defense.
Hillsborough's offense struggled for the most part. Quarterback Tarean Austin (8-for-23, 92 yards) never found his rhythm, though he did connect on a 48-yard touchdown with receiver Charles Lovett (five receptions, 80 yards).
However, consecutive Terriers drives stalled in the red zone to close the first half.
Backup quarterback Ryan Bird connected with receiver Aydric Brown on a 13-yard touchdown midway through the fourth quarter for what turned out to be the game-winner for Hillsborough.
