TAMPA - Beginning today, several thousand more drivers each day will be impacted by a new traffic pattern on Memorial Highway (State Road 60) southwest of Tampa International Airport.
On Aug. 19, a switch affected traffic coming in either direction from Interstate 275 and Kennedy Boulevard. Now, that switch also will affect drivers coming from the airport's George Bean Parkway or westbound Spruce Street.
Traffic on northbound Memorial Highway coming from Kennedy, the airport, westbound Spruce and Interstate 275 now exits on the right to enter Courtney Campbell Causeway toward Clearwater. This replaces the "triple left" turn onto the causeway.
North of the causeway, traffic heading to Independence Parkway, Memorial Highway or Hillsborough Avenue exits to the right.
"Drivers can expect slower traffic and heavy congestion in this area, particularly in the afternoon 'rush hour,' " a state Department of Transportation news release states. "It may be similar to the congestion motorists faced prior to the Aug. 19 traffic switch."
By year's end, traffic flow will improve when more lanes open on the airport's southwest side, the release states.
